Project overview

Located in the middle of a 44 mile long lava flow, the Valley of Fires is a very unusual recreation area. Most surprising is the fact that this harsh black terrain is such an oasis of biological diversity. To interpret the natural history, a series of 15 trailside exhibits were built, many having interactive components, such as full-size animal models, quizzes, and touchable samples of the different types of lava.

To extend the visitor’s experience after leaving this BLM site, we designed an interpretive booklet which includes illustrations and storylines from the exhibits, as well as puzzles, matching games and coloring pages for children.
